ID
numbers
Agave64 utilizes image
ID
number templates consisting of
an
alpha or numeric prefix
coupled with an auto increment sequence number and optionally, a two
digit
extension to
indicate
dupes. The prefix serves as a location, subject or date code and
enables like
subjects to be sorted as a group in the Fotofile database for easy
browsing
and fast searches.
Location
based prefix:
A location based prefix is popular with landscape photographers. If you
need to create a
prefix for Yosemite National Park, CA and
you have selected an ID number
template utilizing a 4 character prefix code, you might use CAYO (CAlifornia+
YOsemite).
For landscapes, a lot of photographers like to place the container area
first in the prefix which is
this case
would be
California or CA.
A resulting IDnumber might look like: CAYO-0034.
Date
based prefix:
Many digital shooters
prefer to organize their images by date. Using the Agave template
generator, you can create a date prefix that would
look like:
100329-001
(2
character year + month + date + sequence number=
March 29, 2001 - image #1) or 20100329-001
(4 character year + month + date).
Date
& Location/Subject based prefix:
To create a prefix
template that's searchable on location/subject as well as date, you
could use 100329GC-001
(2
character year + month + date +
alpha location code = March 29, 2010 Grand Canyon.)
Alternatively, you
could group on location first, by using GC100329-001.
Author's System:
AB100301
(2 character Location code + 2 character year + 2 character month +
image #1) This economical system allows a maximum of 99 images for a
single location per month. But to be honest, over the course of 20+
years, I have yet to capture more than 99 *keepers* in a given
month, for
a single location.
Prefix
Management
For easy reference, each
code is linked to a descriptive phrase and
stored in a look-up database. The example here
is showing alpha prefixes. Date type prefixes will display in the same
manner.
Barcodes for
film shooters
Most slide label programs use
barcode 39. While barcode 39 font is
very readable, inexpensive and easy to implement, its long length
limits
the size of your slide ID numbers. A readable code 39 representing an
eight
character slide ID number is about all that will fit on a 35mm slide
label. Longer slide ID numbers are not a problem in Agave SPS. We
utilize
barcode
128 which is compact enough to fit a 14 character bar code on a 35mm
slide label and has an excellent read rate.
Phototrac Import
Agave is similar
in many ways
to
Phototrac, an excellent DOS
based slide management system that was popular in the 1990's. For a
nominal fee we can import from Phototrac into Agave. Usually, these
imports can be accomplished via email.
